What is so good about living here?
Cycling: It is Mecca for the cycling fraternity for two reasons - cyclists are very respected by motorists. Most motorists using the roads here are cyclists. The main reason is the Tour de France, which regularly includes a local town as part of its route each July. (2005 Trie-sur-Baïse, 2008 Lannemezan). Some of the TdF's most famous challenges are readily accessible from here. The Col d'Aspin, Col du Tourmalet, Col de Peyresourde and the Col d'Aubisque are 'must do' climbs for some of our more energetic cycling guests. Mountain biking is equally popular and there are few 'access restricted' areas to worry about. The hills are criss-crossed with quiet lanes and off road farm and forest tracks.
Running: Terrain to suit all levels of fitness and so many different circuits to enjoy.
Walking: Some of the mountain walks are spectacular. The Haute Pyrenees has for example 8 well documented mountain walks of varying difficulty that reward the walker with a spectacular mountain tarn views.
Birdlife: The variety of birds is frequently commented on and is additional bonus to those who explore this wonderful countryside. There are red kites, buzzards, green woodpeckers, jays by the dozen, sometimes hoopoes, kingfishers, hen harriers, and if you are very lucky eagles and golden orioles.
Golf: We have access to several good clubs within an hours drive. The ability to be able to play virtually all year is one of the many diversions we can offer. The courses at Lannemezan, Tillac and Lourdes come highly recomended**
Skiing: Being within an hours drive of our nearest resort and within 2 hourrs of several others - we do offer some skiing days out to those who want to variation their activities during their stay.
Other activites: Include white water rafting, 2 water spas in 2 Spa towns which are fantastic, paragliding, hang gliding, places to sample wines and spirits, table tennis and other activities at the house and mountains bikes are available. Through-out the Summer there are plenty of fetes all around. The area is also very big for rugby.
Lunching: Auberges or local farms offer 4-5 courses eating experience of produce grown solely on the farm. Belt but not wallet bustin' value.
Days out: Biarritz (2 hours) for the magnificent coastline, casino and wave watching with wet suited surfers sliding down impressive Atlantic rollers.
Auch very pretty old town.
Carcassonne spectacular and popular tourist attraction. A medieval double walled, turreted hill top fortification containing some good restaurants cafes and craft-shops. Lourdes (45 minutes) for the cure, the Basilica, and its castle which houses a museum dedicated all things culturally Pyrenean.
Marciac (40 minutes) has a huge round the clock jazz jamboree for two weeks in August which draws in Jazz giants and big crowds. Side streets are lined with restaurants and stalls selling craft-work. Great buzz. Mirande (25 minutes) has country'n'western music 2 weeks in July. Attracts big hats and big bikes. Big fun.
Pau (1 hour) for shopping, sight-seeing, its English connections, (boasts first 18 hole golf club in continental Europe and the first French rugby club). Toulouse (1 hour 20 minutes) is full of surprises. A must see historical centre, with university culture and connections to Concorde, Airbus and the Ariane space programme.
Spain (1 hour) for tapas, cheap cigarettes and Rioja.
